No it’s not a magician, trying to do a card trick – instead it’s an ingenious deck of dining cards, each of which is worth $10 off your bill at 52 New York restaurants as long as you spend a minimum of $30 — excluding alcohol, tax or tip.
We had to try it!
I knew I could just shuffle through the deck and choose a place to dine location, cuisine or cost (as each card is contains all that information), or be daring and pick a card at random.
Instead, I picked out the card for La Palapa in the east village where I had been before as I was in the mood for Mexican food.
We dined and just placed the La Palapa Diner’s Deck card into the folder along with a credit card. The server used it just like money, subtracting the $10 from the bill and punching a hole in the card to make it invalid for another use. (Some other restaurants keep the cards for accounting purposes)
What a fabulous gift for yourself or for anyone who lives in or visits Manhattan. The $29.95 deck pays for itself with just three uses. And — if you can manage to try all 52 dining establishments before the end of 2010, you could save $520. (We won’t get into how much you will have spent to save that!)
City Shuffle currently makes two dining decks, one just for Manhattan, the other for Brooklyn and downtown Manhattan. And now they’ve added a Manhattan Bar & Lounge Deck ($19.95), with nightlife destination in the city that never sleeps – from neighborhood hangouts, Irish pubs, and quaint wine bars to live-music venues, sprawling nightclubs and luxury lounges. That deck does work towards your bar tab.
City Shuffle decks make discovering a new restaurant or bar as easy as picking a card! Available at some stores and at www.CityShuffle.com
