Bonnie: When my friend Christine Koury, food director of Woman’s World magazine, mentioned “crispy onions,” I thought she was referring to those canned flour-coated things from French’s that some folks traditionally use, along with Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Soup, to make the classic green bean casserole for the holidays. These are not those.
Instead, Seneca Farms Authentic Crisp Onions are just fried and dried, salted sweet Spanish onions that can add an oniony crunch to food — in sandwiches, salads or soups or on a burger, steak, quesadilla or sprinkled over a bowl of chili — anywhere you’d like the flavor of onions.
I would use these in a green bean casserole — that is, if I ever made one. Personally, I prefer my green beans fairly unadulterated. Thanks for the recommendation, Chris.
Bryan: Onions used to be my enemy. I was a child obsessed with de-onioning anything with even a hint of onion that happened to be served to me. I would pick diced onions out of salsa or off cheeseburgers. Sandwiches sandwiched with raw red onion were quickly purified of their contaminates; the raw flavor was just too strong for me, the texture too obscure.
Though I’ve grown from my childish phase of picking through my food to avoid any old onion, I still find that the allure of raw onions is just not within me. They’re overwhelming and avoidable in almost all presentations, but that’s just raw. Oh the delight of a cooked onion; the aromatic, softly subtle texture of a well-prepared onion. Sautéed, the onion takes on entirely new characteristics, forming the base of many sauces, soups and marinades. But then you can take it even further and make it crunchy again, but also cooked. Deep-friend onions are one of America’s passion foods; from onion rings to awesome blossoms, we love our crunchy, cooked, flavorful onions.
From distaste to wonderment, it’s simply astounding the many faces the onion presents to the foodie world. And then there was one more!
Seneca Farms now produces an all-natural, crispy onion. This is like no onion I’ve ever tasted. Seneca Farms Crisp Onions are freshly sliced, crisped and then lightly salted, adding a crunchy touch to soups, salads or anything else you can think of! These are onions — pure, simple and tasty. No added ingredients and no trans fats.
Perfect on soup or atop a cheese sampling. Toss generously with your favorite salad, or even consider adorning your next steak with the wonderfully crispy onions.
Skip the slicing, dicing and crying. Seneca Farms Crisp Onions provide the perfect crunch for any recipe. They’re not breaded, so they’re not heavy. Made from sweet Spanish onions, the light taste is a truly wonderful flavor addition to anything. Re-appreciate the onion!
Eric: I can easily say that I’m the polar opposite of my brother when it comes to my appreciation (and admiration) for everything onion; I’ve been known on occasion to eat a red onion like an apple. For me, this flavor doesn’t mask the taste of the food I pair with; rather it enhances. What I can agree on is that onion in its cooked form, whether sautéed, fried, baked or grilled, is even that much better.
The Seneca Farms Crisp Onions is a new favorite addiction that I find myself adding to an assortment of dishes, primarily my sandwiches. Sprinkle a handful of the crisp onions on top of a sandwich and not only do you have an incredible flavor profile, but an added “crunch” that helps to replace the standard side of potato chips (or, consequently, the few chips I would usually put on my sandwich for a crunch). Simply delicious!
I had a very similar reaction to you all to this product. I started off expecting to taste those greasy fried onions-in-a-can things that people love so much– boy was I surprised. I love crunch. From sandwiches, to soups, burgers, salads; the texture these can provide a dish to take it from ordinary to extraordinary is really something else. Thank you Seneca Farms for making such a health-conscious product that tastes so good, and can easily improve my meals!
These Seneca crispy dried onions are delicious. Bought a couple bags 3 months ago and got hooked puting them on tuna sandwiches. Now I can’t find them anywhere please tell me who sells them in Redlands. CA Thanks
For the last two weeks I’ve been on a no dairy no grain diet. Meat, fruit, veggies only….I love the crunch of croutons on my salad. The onions quite possibly are better than any crouton I’ve ever eaten and best of all it’s a veggie!!!
Last summer I found out Seneca had stopped making Crisp Onions. Irn all over town getting every last bag I could (22 in all). I just emptied my last bag tonight at dinner. I’ve written to Seneca Snacks, asking why they stopped making them – no answer, asked for the recipe so I could make them myself for my salads and meals – no answer.
We need to get them to start making these again, they were the best on the market. Personally they can drop a few of their other products which aren’t all that great.
I hate to have to go back to French’s/Durkees French Fried Onion rings. If they don’t give us back our Crisp Onions I will stop buying Seneca products all together.
We reached out to the company for you — but they still have not responded. We’ll keep trying. In the meantime — you might like to try Onion Crunch, a new somewhat similar
product that we’ll be posting about in our Bite of the Rest section this month.
I look forward to hearing more about the product Onion Crunch that you told us about. It is obvious that Seneca Farms don’t care about its customers and what they like. They don’t even have the decency to answer questions about why they stopped their production of Crisp Onions.
Hopefully they will be as good or maybe better than Seneca’s product.
