After stopping in at an art opening in Soho, we headed to Mezzogiorno for a late light bite of a pizza and salad.
The eponymous salad included undressed arugula, radicchio, artichokes, celery, mushrooms and thin strips of Parmigiano Reggiano served with a half lemon. We squeezed the juice over our salad then began eating. Oddly our server delivered then the oil and vinegar to the table!
That same server put the spicy housemade oil steeped with red pepper flakes on the table soon after he served our margherita pizza ($14). A drizzle of that from the long-necked metal pitcher was wonderful on the tomato sauce, mozzarella and basil pizza. Again oddly, the server whisked the oil off our table to give to another patron while we were still eating and using it.
I’d recommend a stop in at Mezzogiorno, with a warning to keep on eye out for roving condiments.
Skip the dry Italian cookies they serve gratis with the bill; they’re not worth the calories.
