When I arrived at Mamo in Soho, I realized I had walked past the location many times, not noticing it. I’m glad the publicist invited me to sample the flavors of Provence with seasonal ingredients, a bit Italian style, of the Michelin-starred chef Massimo Sola — formerly of Eataly Roma and Ristorante Quattro Mori.
Upon entering, you climb the stairs to the elegant room with tables spaced far enough apart to hear your dining partners. I liked that.
I began with one of their special cocktails — the al pachilli — a blend of passion fruit puree, pineapple juice chili liqueur and absolut elixer ($16). Quite pleasant.
For our antipasti course, we had their eggplant parmigiana ($18) and their burrata. Most of the latter I’ve had has been served chilled. Not at Mamo. They serve it with an anchovy sauce over cooked vegetables ($22) for an unusually tasty starter. Be sure to try it.
For our salad course, we had the perfectly cooked roasted octopus leg atop spinach along with tomatoes and potatoes ($24) and a crisp arugula and tomato salad topped with parmigiana reggiano slices ($20).
We shared their marinated lamb chops with roasted potatoes (sadly a bit dry) and a tomato. The rabbit stuffed with spinach ($44) was cooked to perfection. The menu stated it was filled with foie gras, but I never found any. Whatever, it was delicious as prepared. I’d recommend it over the grilled lamb chops scottdito style ($42).
We also sampled their housemade chocolate mousse cake with caramel sauce ($13) as it was my friend’s birthday.
