At 8:45 A.M. on a Friday morning, the tables at Maialino — a neighborhood Roman trattoria overlooking Gramercy Park — were full. Luckily, I had called ahead to make a reservation as I was meeting my friend Pat for her birthday. We’d both been to dinner at this newest restaurant from Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group, and had heard great things about breakfast. We weren’t disappointed.
My Caio e Pepe Strapazzato ($11), soft scrambled eggs loaded with Pecorino cheese and freshly ground pepper came with crisp cracker-like bread. Pat’s fluffy Ricotta Pancakes were topped with fresh ricotta cheese and a side serving of maple syrup. We shared an order of Pancetta al Peppe Nero ($6), thick cut peppery bacon.
We ended breakfast with a neither too sweet, nor too fatty lemon scone, brought to the table with a lit candle in honor of her special day.
Each menu item was perfection; the service even better. A great way to start any day.
