After seeing the talented Bobby Cannavale in Eugene O’Neill ‘s “The Hairy Ape” at the Armory (also with David Costabile), we walked over to Hell’s Kitchen to sample the fare at King of Kobe, known as the “The Burger & Hot Dog Monarchy.”
As their guests, we tried lots of the offerings beginning with Manhattanite ($8.75) hot dog topped with caramelized apples, frisee, shaved cheddar and a wasabi aioli. Neither I nor my dining partner generally eat hot dogs but agreed this one could change our minds.
The fried balls of Mac & Cheese ($7.25) come creamy on the inside, crisp outside. The four rounds are a meal in themselves served with — an unnecessary to me — side of roasted garlic aioli. Kids will love them.
Do not miss the unusually topped burgers. Try either the Duke of Lux ($12.75) with smoked gouda, caramelized onions, bacon and chipotle aioli or the King’s Standard ($9.95) with a roasted tomato, white cheddar, pickles, cherry pepper aioli with bacon. Both come on a branded bun.
The battered fries ($4.50) are not to be missed; again crispy on the outside, steamy soft inside. The red onion rings are flavorful ($4.75) but need larger pieces of onion, as each bite was mostly fried coating.
The red cabbage cole slaw is creamy ($3.75); a perfect accompaniment to the burgers and dogs.
Kings of Kobe does offer wine… in cans ($5.75). It’s rose and drinkable. Beer is available ($4.75).
We ended with the Chocolate Royal ($6.25) a housemade chocolate pudding with crushed pretzels and brownie crumble, too sweet for me – but those with a sweet tooth will enjoy.
