When one of my new friends from my trip to Sicily ended up in Manhattan, we decided to grab a bite at Il Punto in Hell’s Kitchen, as I had enjoyed both their food and hospitality.
That evening’s mouth tickler was a tiny bowl of a flavorful chilled tomato soup with crisp bread and basil. We enjoyed that with their warm breads while sipping on the Sicilian Nero D’Avalo 2012, Tami ($55).
For a starter, we chose their creamy mozzarella ($22), served with red and yellow tomatoes and black truffles, all drizzled with a balsamic reduction. I’d recommend, as I would their tortellini ($22) ai porcini. These small pasta squares filled with a sage seasoned blend of beef, mushrooms and shallots came with grape tomatoes and porcini mushrooms — all drizzled with a truffle imbibed extra virgin olive oil.
The salmon fillet was cooked to perfection, served with ($28) asparagus plus an asparagus reduction and a side of not-to-be-missed lemon flavored mashed potatoes.
After we drooled over the description of the warm chocolate souffle and passed on ordering it, our server brought us a complementary one. We devoured every morsel of the warm chocolate cake topped with vanilla ice cream and fresh berries..
When we asked for some limoncello to finish our meal as we had done in Sicily, he then offered us a complementary glass of his homemade cherry grappa, explaining that in the north, they drink grappa, not the limoncello of the south.
We sipped and smiled, loving their hospitality and knowing we’d return.
