One friend, who always looks for cheap eats, had suggested Freda’s Caribbean & Soul Cuisine, serving Caribbean and Southern fare on Columbus. She had eaten there with her fam before a Solstice concert at the Cathedral of St John the Divine, suggesting “the oxtail and jerk chicken both which came with yummy sides.”
When another friend and I planned a walk from one end of Central Park to the other, we chose this spot on Columbus and 109th as a perfect destination.
I walked up from 15th Street to 42 to meet her for the walk. By the time we arrived, we had worked up quite an appetite, stopping across the street for a bottle of Sancerre to accompany our meal as I knew it was a BYOB place.
Freda’s offers friendly service with large portions — more than enough to satisfy our hunger from the 5+ mile walk. Each entree includes peas & rice plus two sides. We followed the suggestion of the friend who recommended Freda’s and ordered the jerk chicken ($11.25) and the oxtails ($14.95). We had the former with the sweet not-to-be-missed candied yams and callaloo, Freda’s version a creamy blend of okra and spinach in coconut milk; the latter with collard greens and steamed green beans. Both are recommendable.
Freda’s is a good stopping place if you’re at the North end of Central Park looking for a place to eat. Be sure to pick up your libation across the street first.
