The winning of the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars in 2010 changed vegan chef Chloe Coscarelli’s life. This smart millennial parlayed that victory into the a couple of cookbooks and By Chloe, a vegan restaurant soon to have multiple locations. I was invited to stop by the Greenwich Village flagship Bleeker Street location for a tasting.

I’m glad that I had some research to see which items to sample before arriving as the lines to the counter were long and the menu had many unusual — unfamiliar to me — offerings since. For starters, we requested the quinoa taco salad, the spicy Thai salad, a pesto-meatball sandwich, the guac burger and air baked french fries.

I’m more of a non-vegan food person. I didn’t like the mushy texture of the portobello + veggie “meatballs” in the potato sub roll,  although the flavor of the marinara, with sweet peppers and basil pesto was good as it masked the nut-“cheeses.”  I found the flavor and texture of the guac burger ($9.95) to be okay. That consists of a black bean-quinoa-sweet potato patty on a whole grain with guacamole, corn salsa and a chipotle sauce.  The air-baked fries both regular and sweet potato are really good, served with a sweet beet ketchup, but only if eaten immediately.

What I would recommend is the flavorful quinoa taco salad with ($10.95) with spicy chorizo (made from seitan), black beans, sweet corn, avocado slices, sliced grape tomatoes and tortilla strips with a crèma and an agave-lime vinaigrette. I’d actually go back for that asking for it with the crispy wontons that accompany the spicy Thai salad (although I didn’t like the texture or flavor of the apricot-sriracha glazed tempeh on that; $10.95). It came with quinoa, edamame, scallions and a peanut dressing in addition to the crunchy crispy wontons.

We washed all this down with seasonal lemonade ( $2.50/$3.50) and freshly cold-brewed, unsweetened ice tea ( $2.50/$3.50).

And of course we had to try dessert. That day they offered a flavorful gluten-free + kosher certified seasonal pumpkin “ice cream” made from almond milk ($4.95 – 4oz).  One bite was enough for me. And we couldn’t miss the chocolate chip cookies ($2.50 each), sampling one regular and one gluten-free. Both fine.

The lines at By Chloe amazed me, as this is not food I’d really go back for. I would recommend it those who wants to eat vegan options, as it’s better than most non-animal products I’ve sampled.
