With the arrival of spring, we were out for a long walk around Central Park. We had a destination in mind. A friend told me that I had to try Turnstyle, “the underground market” down one of the two orange subway entrances near 58th and 8th.

Not!

I’m a food snob. Once I saw this fairly new marketplace, I neither wanted to eat underground; nor to dine in a subway station. And, I wanted wine with my meal.

We headed back to the Time Warner Center where — on the way to the ladies room — we had passed the inviting sandwiches from Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bakery. One area is for take-out with high top tables; the other has sit-down table services where wine was served. We opted for the latter.

Since my friend had just returned from Vienna so we thought a Grüner was in order. We tried the crisp and classic Stadt Krems 2015 ($48).

We started yakking with the friendly ladies at the table next to ours; they were Johnson & Wales college friends getting together 40+ years later. Ends up one woman is the mother of chef Michael Decicco. (He wasn’t there that day, yet managed to make his mom and her friends feel special.)

On their advice, we shared the avocado toast, something that was added to the menu less than a week before. Decicco’s version is piquillo marmalade-spread bread spread, topped with mashed avocado, sliced radishes and pickled red onion all sprinkled with salty feta. It works.

Those women shared what they had left of some fabulous pastries. Next time I will need to indulge in more of Bouchon’s baked goods!
