We stopped in at Bottino, walking north on 10th Avenue after a recent opening at the Yancey Richardson Gallery, where I fell for the work of — not the artist in the exhibition, but — Olivo Barbieri, an Italian artist and photographer.
Although crowded, we were able to get a table in the bar and started with Gavi La Giustiniana, Piemonte ($42) while deciding selects from their Tuscan fair.
We ended up with three appetizers that were quite satiating; two that I’d highly recommend. First the Frito Misto – a lightly battered tempura of shrimp, calamari, fennel, celery and cauliflower ($14.00), and then one of the evening’s specials of tender poached Mediterranean octopus with fingerling potatoes, olives haricot vert, dressed in fresh lemon and olive oil. Both were hearty portions for the price.
My least favorite — but still good — is the Brookyn-made burrata and speck (smoked prosciutto) topped with baby arugula as I found the inside too liquid. I prefer burrata with a creamy textured filling. That said, it was still delicious sopped up with some of the with crusty bread.
I recommend — especially if you’re in the area visiting the Chelsea galleries.
