Earlier this summer, I attended a Taitenger tasting event catered by Birds & Bubbles. I met the chef/owner Sarah Simmons when I commented not on her food which was quite good, but on her make-up. She looked fabulous.

She smiled, saying that as a chef she hardly ever wore any but had decided to do so that evening. We exchanged cards. I wanted to return to her Lower East Side restaurant, where I had sampled some of her amazing Southern fried chicken at a Tabasco event last fall soon after she opened.

I did so one Sunday recently for brunch.

We started with her bloody Marys ($14) made with McClure’s spicy mix and her homemade pickles. Oddly the virgin Mary cost the same even without the cucumber vodka!

Not surprisingly in a fried-chicken-centric restaurant, what shone was her basket of perfectly cooked, moist and tender chicken pieces ($15) served with a spicy mustard sauce sweetened with sorghum. I’d highly recommend as I would their dish of poached egg in a Mediterranean tomato sauce topped with melted feta and served with thick Sally Lunn toasted bread ($13). Both comfort food for sure!

Next time I plan to order the crispy potato salad that we saw served to every other table. Those chunks of fried potatoes drizzled with a shallot aioli and herbs were inviting, but we decided to pass as we had just indulged in their sweet blueberry sugar biscuit topped with a sugary bourbon sauce ($4).  Next time for sure!
