Add dinner at The Myriad Group’s Bâtard to your must try list. Yes, this restaurant that focuses on classic European fare and elegant service is that good.
Bâtard, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Tribeca, had been on my “go to” list since it opened. I finally made it there during a recent Restaurant Week. The friends I was meeting were late, so I decided to try one of Batard’s cocktails while waiting. It is a blend of Russian vodka with Aperol, a splash of grapefruit juice and hibiscus syrup garnished with a ribbon of cucumber ($11); I’d recommend this Café Racer, especially if you’re a fan of Aperol Spritzers.
With four of us at the table, we were able to sample most everything on the menu, most of which is available on the regular menu. Our apps included the rich in flavor heirloom tomato and nectarine salad over whipped ricotta topped with a crumble of pine nuts and parmesan; smoked trout in a puddle of asparagus puree topped with quail eggs, cheese crisps and trout roe; and steak tartare with wild rice and a soy-soaked egg yolk served with a sourdough chip.
We skipped the risotto option for our main courses. Instead, two of us tried the pre-brined, then roasted Amish chicken breast with potatoes and wild mushrooms, the other had the crispy white-fish branzino over asparagus and golden grape tomatoes.
Each dessert was worth the calories: a duck egg crème brûlée topped with cherries; a chocolate ganache torte with a hazelnut semifreddo; and the fruit-flavored sorbets.
I would recommend a trip to Tribeca just to dine at Bâtard.
